Oily Skin Care Guide

Our Face Care Guide for Oily Skin helps you find the best ways to balance your skin's oil production for a smooth, healthy look.

What is oily skin?

Prone to excessive production of sebum, secreted by the sebaceous glands and flowing through the pores.

The skin has a shiny appearance and uneven texture, and may have enlarged pores. It may have pimples and blackheads.

Oily skin has shine all over the face, including the cheeks. If the shine is localized only in the T-zone (forehead, nose, chin), it is because your skin is not oily, butmixed .

The good news for those with oily skin: The sebum layer on the surface of the skin protects it from dehydration and provides better protection against external aggressions, which delays skin aging . Oily skin often shows far fewer signs of aging than dry skin!

Identify

- The skin is oily to the touch and tends to shine throughout the day.

- It doesn't hold makeup well as it seems to slide off the face.

- It usually has pimples and blackheads.

- The skin has an uneven texture, is congested and has visible, open pores.

To care

- At night, always cleanse your skin twice with an oil-based cleanser, even if you haven't worn makeup.

- Apply a purifying mask once a week.

- Don't use lotions with alcohol to prevent shine: completely removing sebum tells the skin to produce more. It's a vicious cycle that really has to end!

- Avoid foundations with very heavy coverage: they can make pores look larger and your skin look brighter throughout the day.

1⃣ Double Cleansing

Many people believe that foaming cleansers are better for oily skin, but in reality, unnatural foaming cleansers can actually disrupt your skin’s protective layer and signal your skin to produce even more oil. Stripping away sebum can trigger a cycle where your skin produces extra oil to compensate for what’s been stripped away.

Switching to a natural cleansing oil or gel that emulsifies, meaning it foams slightly when it comes into contact with water, can help oily skin feel more balanced and produce less oil.

Try to get out of the habit of thinking that deep cleansing is good. If your skin feels tight after cleansing or feels like it urgently needs moisturizer, it’s because your cleansing routine is too intense.

How to do it?

In the morning, you will cleanse your skin only once. But at night, even if you don't wear makeup, cleanse your skin twice: once with an oil-based product, the makeup remover. And a second time with the same product you used in the morning.

You will need two products, one oil-based and one water-based.

2⃣ Hydration

Finish your beauty routine with a moisturizer that nourishes your skin without creating excess oil. Rich in essential acids and nutrients, the right moisturizer provides comfort to your skin and combats dehydration, as well as the essential fats your skin needs to stop excess sebum production.

You have two options:

Option 1 - Choose a more generic moisturizer, suitable for your skin type, that can be used in the morning and at bedtime. (but in this case, you will need to apply sunscreen in the morning)

Option 2 - Use a daytime moisturizer with sun protection and one at night that helps with skin regeneration.

3⃣ Sun Protection

If you haven’t opted for two moisturizers, one for the day and one for the night, and prefer to have just one moisturizer, then you need to supplement your skincare regimen with sun protection to protect your skin from future damage. This is the last step in your morning routine.

Os seus cuidados específicos

Depois de criar a sua rotina básica, com os 3 passos essenciais, avalie a sua pele e veja se há ainda algo que gostasse de corrigir ou alguma preocupação que gostaria de tratar.

Pimples and Blackheads

This is one of the most common complaints of people with oily skin. There are several causes for the appearance of pimples, such as genetic factors, external factors (tobacco, alcohol, poor diet or use of incorrect cosmetic products for your skin) or even taking medication such as contraceptives, hormones and antidepressants. Pimples and blackheads can occur on any skin type, but they are more common in people with oily skin, even in adulthood.

To treat this type of skin concern, follow your skincare routine religiously, avoid sun exposure and do not pop pimples. Invest in skin treatments such as:

1) A face mask , once or twice a week, like Dermalogica's Charcoal Rescue Detoxifying Mask , Evolve's True Balance SOS Face Mask, or Antipodes' Halo Brightening Mud Face Mask .

2) Gently exfoliate and balance your skin with a toner like Dermalogica's Clear Start Micro-Pore Mist Spray Toner , Evolve's Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Brightening Toner , or Antipodes' Resurrect Clarifying Facial Toner .

3) Invest in an anti-blemish treatment serum like Dermalogica's Clear Start Breakout Clearing Booster , Dermalogica's Active Clearing AGE Bright Spot Fader or Evolve's Rainforest Rescue Detox Serum .

Dehydrated skin

Dehydrated skin lacks water. Any type of skin can be dehydrated, and skin dehydration can be caused by external factors, such as living in a very dry environment, or being exposed to air conditioning or heating. It can also be a consequence of lifestyle habits, such as drinking too little water, smoking or consuming alcohol. The ideal is to correct these external factors. In terms of facial care, try:

1) Add a toner to your routine, such as OSKIA's Pure Rose Floral Water & MSM Toner , SON & PARK's Beauty Water Cleansing, Exfoliating & Moisturizing Toner or Dermalogica's Age Smart Antioxidant Hydramist Toner .

2) Add a face serum , such as DERMALOGICA Skin Hydration Booster , OSKIA Isotonic Hydra-Serum or EVOLVE Natural Hyaluronic Acid Hydrating Serum .

3) Use a face mask once or twice a week, such as DERMALOGICA's Melting Moisture Hydrating Mask or EVOLVE's Bio Retinol Gold Mask .

4) Add a face oil to try to replenish your skin's lipid barrier and retain moisture. For example , Kjaer Weis' The Beautiful Oil or Antipodes' Organic Divine Face Oil .

Dull and lifeless skin

Firmness, fine lines and wrinkles

All skin types age. This is one of the reasons why you should use sunscreen every day, as it will always be your best preventive weapon. From the age of 25, you can start using anti-aging products to prevent the main signs of aging from appearing. Whether you want to prevent or correct signs of aging that have already appeared, we suggest these options:

1) Add an anti-aging serum to your routine. For example, there is the Oskia Super 16 Serum , the EVOLVE Superfood 360 Anti-Aging Serum , the DERMALOGICA Phyto-Nature Age Smart Firming Serum , or the OSKIA Retinoid Level 1 - 0.2% Night Serum .

2) Add a Face Oil for wrinkle treatment and firming , such as OSKIA Restoration Oil or Kjaer Weis The Beautiful Oil .

Black spots and pigmentation

We talk about pigmentation spots when the skin pigmentation is uneven. These darker spots are caused by the excess production of melanin by cells called melanocytes and can occur in any skin type, at any age, due to factors such as sun exposure, pregnancy, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (acne or wound healing) or skin aging. To treat skin with spots, try:

1) AHAs , such as Evolve's Glycolic Acid Exfoliating Brightening Toner or Oskia's Lactic Acid Micro-Peeling Liquid Mask .

2) Retinol or Bakuchiol . You can do this in a gentle way, for example by swapping your cleansing gel for Oskia's Renaissance Cleansing Gel and adding Oskia's Restoration Oil to your routine.

3) Add Vitamin C to your routine with a serum , like Oskia's Renaissance Brightlight Anti-Blemish Serum , Dermalogica's Age Smart Biolumin-C Serum , or Evolve's Bio-Retinol + Vitamin C Booster .

4) Try a serum with Niacinamine , like Oskia's City Life Booster Anti-Pollution Concentrate Serum , or Dermalogica's PowerBright Spot Treatment Serum .

5) You can also swap your daytime sunscreen/moisturizer for something more effective in combating dark spots, such as PowerBright Pure Light Anti-Dark Spot Sunscreen SPF50 .

Dark circles and puffiness

Everyone has dark circles! There is, of course, a genetic factor, but sooner or later we all suffer from this problem. If it is something you want to try to alleviate, although there is no definitive solution and the best solution is to sleep, try using a good eye cream, such as Dermalogica Stress Positive Eye Lift Eye Cream , Oskia City Life I-Zone Lip and Eye Balm or Dermalogica Age Smart BioLumin-C Eye Serum .

Sensitivity and redness

Sensitive skin can be categorized in many ways and for many different reasons. Generally, a diagnosis and treatment by a doctor is always the best option. However, if you know that you have sensitivities, you should take this into account when choosing your products.

In all our skincare collections, you can select the concern "Sensitivity and Redness" which will give you pre-filtered results for this issue.

In any case, we recommend that you also check out Dermalogica's UltraCalming range, which is formulated with the most sensitive skin in mind. Gallinée is also a great brand for those with sensitive skin, as it respects your skin's microbiome and its products are dermatologically tested.
